October 12, 2008 Meeting Minutes

7 pm
Paula Hatten’s house
Attending: Kathy Servian, Paula Hatten, Stacey Layman, Nan Branch

Paula announced that Erin had submitted her resignation. Job duties and distance have made it difficult for her to participate. She wishes the League well.

Current members are: Nan Branch, Kathy Servian, Stacey Layman, Paula Hatten, and Lindsey Lilley

The purpose of this meeting is to discuss the future of the JL of Fairmont. Paula contacted the AJLI corporate office (our contact is Jean Lubas) to discuss our situation with them and to discuss our options on staying open or closing down the League. Paula was told that the Wheeling chapter is also having trouble with membership. Jean offered to come and meet with our League to discuss future options for us with special consideration for our challenges and size.

If we should decide to close the League, we would need to obtain the services of an attorney. We would be able to donate our remaining funds to another non-profit agency. We would be required to have a formal meeting and keep official minutes. These would need to be provided to AJLI via fax. AJLI then sends remaining members a letter providing them with their options to transfer to other Leagues.

The option of “freezing” the League was not an option.

Our third option is to try one last time to revive the League. We were advised to do this by having an AJLI representative come and meet with us in January. After further discussion, it was motioned by Nan Branch that we make one more attempt to revive the League by sending out a mailing to sustainers inviting them to meet with us to discuss potential action for the League in continuing. This was seconded by Paula Hatten. We will have a simple gathering of desserts and coffee.

We discussed holding an event in December at the Women’s Club. This would serve as a meeting/membership drive. Kathy volunteered to make the invitations, Paula will book the event on December 13th. Paula will contact JoAnn Lough, Pam Nolan, and Cathy Petty about possibly speaking at this event.

On other business, Stacey Layman volunteered to update the member roster online so we can get dues current.

Community Service
We unanimously decided to do the Meal in a Bag donations for the November general meeting. Donations should be collected for the general meeting and will be distributed to Soup Opera or other appointed recipient organization.

Paula volunteered to contact AJLI to further discuss planning their visit with us.

Treasurer report:
Nan reported that she needs information regarding the current status of the CD at Huntington Bank. This resides with Jennie Amos (moved to Wheeling but stays in contact with the League). Paula volunteered to e-mail Jennie Amos to find out about our CD at Huntington Bank.
